There are mainly 2 types of ID card printers

– Retransfer ID Card Printer
Direct-to-card printers are also known as DTC or dye-sublimation printers. This is the most common type of ID card printer. They are mainly used to produce photo ID cards, loyalty cards, membership cards, and more.
Retransfer printers use a 2-step reverse transfer printing process. This will securely bind the design to cards. Initially, via ribbon, the design is printed onto an overlay film. This film is then combined with the surface of the card by pressure and heat. This result in increased quality and durability
No border is left around the edge of the surface as Re-transfer card printers print over the edge, ensuring printed ID cards have a truly professional look. Complex card designs contain solid block colors that can be printed using Retransfer ID Card Printers.
Both Direct-to-Card Printer & Retransfer ID Card Printers come in single-side and dual-side printers. In single-sided printers, only one side can be printer whereas, in dual-sided printers, it can print on both sides of the card.

To print onto access control cards and smart cards containing a raised chip, Retransfer printing is ideal, as the print head does not make direct contact with the card. Therefore there is no risk of the chip causing any damage to the print head.
